Case Study: Fangzhou Stage, Guiyang
Fangzhou Stage has reopened in Guiyang as a renewed cultural destination within the Future Ark cultural tourism and commercial district.
Built around the new brand concept "Opera at Fangzhou," the venue brings together traditional Chinese opera, architectural experience, specialty dining and nighttime consumption. It is designed as a new urban cultural landmark where visitors can enjoy performances, leisure activities and cultural experiences in one setting.
DLW Lighting supported the renovation with a professional stage lighting solution, helping traditional opera stand out in the competition.

Stage renew
The Stage is located beside the Nanming River in Guiyang and is designed in the style of a traditional Chinese open-air theatre. Its architectural language includes red walls, green roof tiles, upturned eaves and traditional decorative details. After five years of reconstruction, resumed performances on July 18, 2026, it is a regular performance venue of the Guizhou Peking Opera Theatre, allowing audiences to watch opera while enjoying tea and dining. This creates a more intimate and immersive relationship between performers and spectators.
It also a stage for tour performance of the Southwest China Peking Opera Alliance, many classic play have staged, such as:
Jumping Caishen.
The Heavenly Maiden Scatters Flowers.
The Golden-Winged Great Peng.
The Fourth Son Returns to His Mother.
The Red-Maned Horse.
Technical Requirements
Traditional Chinese opera relies on highly expressive performance details. Facial expressions, costume patterns, hand movements, sleeve movements and body posture all contribute to the storytelling.
The lighting system therefore needed to satisfy several requirements:
Reveal performers' facial expressions clearly.
Preserve costume color and decorative detail.
Make sleeve movements and gestures visually legible.
Provide accurate and consistent illumination for live opera.
Create different emotional atmospheres through color temperature and intensity.
Support both intimate scenes and more energetic performance moments.
Integrate naturally with traditional architectural surroundings.
Operate reliably for a regular programme of performances.
Maintain flexibility for different opera titles and stage configurations.
